Dan Lancaster
Dan Lancaster is a London-based producer, songwriter, artist and mixing engineer. A former lead singer and guitarist of British post-hardcore band Proceed (which broke up in 2012), he is mostly self-taught and active in music production since the late 2000s. According to Lancaster, the band gave him inspiration to start working as a producer and audio engineer. He is notable for working in metal, rock and pop genres.
Lancaster has worked with artists which include Don Broco (producing and mixing most of their albums), Bring Me the Horizon (mixing songs on That's The Spirit & Amo and Post Human: Survival Horror & Music To Listen To... EPs), One OK Rock (producing and mixing their single Broken Heart Of Gold), Blink 182 (mixing songs California & Left Alone), Enter Shikari (mixing songs on Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible) and Polyphia (mixing The Most Hated EP), amongst others. He also mixed Ed Sheeran's song, made in collaboration with Bring Me The Horizon, Bad Habits. Lancaster has also worked with One Ok Rock, who went on to support Muse during the Will of the People World Tour in 2023, co-writing, producing and mixing the title track on the album "Eye of the Storm" and the single "Broken Heart of Gold". Recently, Lancaster has also gotten to collaborate and work with the likes of RØRY, The Warning and Måneskin.
Lancaster has mixed Muse's Won't Stand Down off of the album Will of the People.
Touring with Muse
In 2022, Morgan Nicholls announced on his Twitter that he would not be part of the Will Of The People tour, wishing the band, the crew and the fans all the best.[1] As a result, Lancaster was utilised as Morgan's replacement on keys and synth, with his first show being on May 9th, 2022 at London's Eventim Apollo.
Like Morgan, Lancaster takes care over certain keyboard and vocoder parts, as well as percussion. He sings additional backing vocals, like the line "We can save you", audible on Compliance's live version, the "M-M-M-M-Mad-Mad-Mad" part of Madness, backing vocals on Undisclosed Desires, additional backing vocals on Knights of Cydonia, as well as backing vocals on Assassin's Grand Omega Bosses Edit version, which were formerly sung by Wolstenholme. He also plays lead guitar on songs such as Resistance, Starlight, Thought Contagion, Uprising, as well as the second guitar part on Will of the People. Additionally, he also plays two electronic drum pads on Map of the Problematique, Will of the People and Uprising, and does the beatboxing during the solo on Compliance. Lancaster also puts more emphasis on triggering samples live, having a sample pad in his live setup.
Lancaster seems to be handling more of the high range vocal parts for most songs, compared to Wolstenholme, but mostly sings in the mid range when Wolstenholme is singing in the higher ranges. For example in Time is Running Out, Lancaster sings the lows when Wolstenholme is singing mid range. He seems to have a higher vocal range than Morgan thus being more flexible. An example of this can be heard during Knights of Cydonia during the Chorus.
