Analysis and Explanation

Dig Down was written, recorded and released alongside a music video in around six weeks, among the shortest production times for any Muse song in history. For the 2017 tour, though it was skipped at the first concert in Orlando, it became the opener from that point onwards and was performed at every show for the rest of the year. The song was almost always the opening track throughout its Drones-era performances. For 2018, Dig Down returned, though not as the show intro. Instead, the song was performed midway through the setlist and sometimes in conjunction with Isolated System.

The song's controversial status among fans might not cement it in a permanent setlist position, though it was used the opener for the 2017 tour at basically every show. Surprisingly it made just 3 more appearances in the 2018 promo-shows, with one of them being the Acoustic Gospel Version on Jools Holland.

The Acoustic Gospel Version was played during the Simulation Theory World Tour instead of the normal version, apparently due to the band growing tired to playing the normal version. Fans generally see this version as superior to the original version.
