Part of the short five-gig Asian leg of the The 2nd Law tour.

Information

A special one-off show organised in the small venue Zepp at Tokyo's DiverCity Plaza. The band has since declared the gig as one of the best and "funniest" of their career.[1]

The Show

The set contained many deep cuts and rarer songs. Futurism was played for the first time since 2000 and only the second time ever. Fury, Can't Take My Eyes Off You, and Hyper Music, were also played for the first time since 2008, 2010, and 2011 respectively.

For the second encore, the band dressed up in their Panic Station music video costumes and were surrounded by dancers and members of the crew who were also dressed in random Japanese style costumes (for example, Tom Kirk dressed up as a jug of milk).

At the end of the main set, Matt gave his Manson Matt Black (batch) to a person in the audience. (See the Tweet)

Last performance of Can't Take My Eyes Off You to date.

Media

The full gig was filmed and recorded, and Tom Kirk stated online that it would be made into a film with assistance from videographer Tim Qualtrough.

Despite this announcement, the full gig has yet to be released but 6 individual songs have been:

  • Futurism was released in December 2014 as the 2014 muse.mu Christmas present, and was also later released via the band's YouTube channel in January 2015. (The audio was edited in post-production to add a distortion vocal effect to Matt's voice to make it sound more inline with the studio version)
  • The entire second encore (Panic Station, Supermassive Black Hole, Can't Take My Eyes Off You and Starlight) was released on the band's YouTube channel in April 2020, most likely as a gift to fans during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Hyper Music (audio only) was released in December 2020 as the 2020 muse.mu Christmas present.

Speech

Before Micro Cuts Bellamy "Thank you Tokyo! We're playing some more from this tonight. Weird oldies. Last time we played here we opened with this song."
Before Futurism "Arigatou! This next song was a bonus...track. Japanese bonus track on our second album Origin of Symmetry. We've never played it here before, never played it for ten years so.. here we go!"
Before Fury "This is another! Another Japanese bonus track! Uh which album, Absolution!"
Before New Born "Yes! How you guys feelin'?"
Before Time Is Running Out Howard "Thanks for coming down! I know it's short notice and everything but we wanted to play for you guys and uh, remind ourselves of 10 years ago last time we played here, or 11 years ago whenever it was. So yeah cheers, thanks a lot."
Before Supermassive Black Hole Bellamy "Yes Tokyo! Say hello to our wonderful crew!"
Before Can't Take My Eyes Off You "This next song is for all you love birds out there. Okay!"
