Dead Star has not been performed as often as most people would generally think. Alongside In Your World, Dead Star had a relatively high chart placement, and was performed at most concerts since its debut in October 2001. When In Your World was abandoned half way through 2002, Dead Star continued to be performed at most concerts. Dead Star, despite being released as a single just the year before, was not performed in 2003.
Dead Star made its live debut October 2001 alongside In Your World and made regular appearances for the rest of the year. When In Your World was abandoned half way through 2002, Dead Star continued to be performed at most concerts. The first performances of Dead Star in October 2001 have a slightly different ending riff (just after the last chorus) at least before the Nancy show.

The Japanese tend to see special songs show up in their setlists and in February 2004 Muse performed Dead Star live again in Japan. After a series of performances in February and March, Dead Star continued to make rare appearances for the remainder of the Absolution tour. Dead Star was soundchecked at a November 2006 gig however, like Fury in July 2006, it was not performed. By 2005, though, Dead Star was removed from setlists. As a special treat for fans, in 2008 Muse performed Dead Star live at the majority of gigs that year.
After not being played in 2003, the song returned in February 2004 and it continued to make somewhat regular appearances until the end of the year when it was once again dropped from setlists. Interestingly Dead Star was soundchecked at a November 2006 gig but it was not performed. The song finally returned for the first time in 4 years in 2008 and was performed at the majority of gigs that year.

Since 2008 Dead Star has been a setlist anomaly, only making rare appearances in tours since. For The Resistance tour, Dead Star was merged with Micro Cuts (the latter half of Micro Cuts was played instead of the latter half of Dead Star). This "Dead Cuts", as fans have coined it, has not been seen since its two performances in 2010. Again in 2013 Dead Star made a series of scattered performances including at the famous Tokyo Zepp performance. After being performed once during the March 2015 Psycho UK Tour, Dead Star would only be performed at Download Festival 2015 for the remainder of the Drones tour. Matt cited that fans did not mosh to this song at Download, which was viewed as a letdown and possibly discouraged the band from playing the song again in 2016.

On a less-serious note, if you want to see Dead Star live, make sure it was not performed last year. Dead Star has never been performed live two years in a row since 2001/2002. Try to attend a Japanese gig or a double-night gig. If it's a double-night gig, go to both gigs but hold up a large "Dead Star" sign on the first night and try to get the band's attention. The most common reasons for Dead Star being performed are: it's in Japan, it's at a "rarity gig", or it's at a double-night gig where the band were aware of the song request.
Dead Star was a setlist option for the 2017 Shepherd's Bush Empire by-request show and was played at there. It also made the top 10 for the 2018 La Cigale by-request show, but it wasn't performed for unknown reasons. A shortened version was included as part of the Metal medley at the Royal Albert Hall gig later that year, but strangely it wasn't included in any subsequent performances of the Medley. It's unknown when the band will play the song again, though it's likely to reappear at some point.
