Description
A song influenced by contemporary R&B such as Timbaland[3], using a drum machine and vocoder-laden vocals.[2] Matt plays neither guitar nor piano on "Undisclosed Desires",[3] whilst Chris plays slap bass.[4] The result is apparently very reminiscent of Depeche Mode.[2] According to Matt the song is very personal in nature, relating to his relationship with his then-girlfriend.[5] Matt said, "This is something totally new for the band. It is influenced by contemporary R'n'B and a little of the David Bowie album 'Ashes to Ashes'. It is a song about love and the dark secrets that lovers share."
Information
Undisclosed Desires was originally a guitar based rock track, an acoustic one but it ended being an electronic song with a dance and a R&B style.[6] We can hear how it used to sound with the acoustic guitar replacing the strings on the 'Making of' of the album, while Matt and Dom are discussing the process of recording the song.
Matt said he thought Muse fans would absolutely hate the song but is pleasantly surprised with the reaction. He believes this is his favourite song off the album because it's completely different than anything they've ever done before and this is the type of sound they would like to explore in future albums.[7]
For live performances, during The Resistance Matt used his Manson Keytar, but from The 2nd Law Tour onward he plays no instrument and just sings and usually goes and shakes hands with audience members (exception being the NA Summer Amphitheatres Tour where he filled in certain parts with his then brand new custom Manson acoustic guitar, probably just to get used to it/test it's sound live)
During all dates of The Resistance Tour, Matt usually played a synth introduction with his keytar, which sounds similar to Depeche Mode's live synth intro of "Enjoy the Silence".[8][9]
For live performances, some of the orchestral notes are sometimes replaced with electronic notes.
Live
Though not the hit the band hoped it would be, Undisclosed Desires still managed to chart very high in many countries, leading to its reputation as a recognizable, catchy pop song. With that description, though, it manages to attract criticism from some diehard fans when it is performed live. This is why it is common to hear poor reception regarding Undisclosed Desires when performed live. Regardless, with the exception of the 2015 Drones Festival Tour and the 2014 trio of gigs, Undisclosed Desires has appeared on every tour since The Resistance Tour.
Lyrics
I know you've suffered But I don't want you to hide It's cold and loveless I won't let you be denied
Soothing I'll make you feel pure Trust me You can be sure
I want to reconcile the violence in your heart I want to recognise your beauty's not just a mask I want to exorcise the demons from your past I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart
You trick your lovers That you're wicked and divine You may be a sinner But your innocence is mine
Please me Show me how it's done Tease me You are the one
I want to reconcile the violence in your heart I want to recognise your beauty's not just a mask I want to exorcise the demons from your past I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart
Please me Show me how it's done Trust me You are the one
I want to reconcile the violence in your heart I want to recognise your beauty's not just a mask I want to exorcise the demons from your past I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart
