The band formed in 2007 by Jack Spence and Dan Brown, joined by Liam Cromby, Rickie Bloom and Tom Whittaker, under the name Dead But Still Dreaming. After a while, Bloom left the band and was replaced by Alfie Sculfy. The band then decided on a new start as We Are The Ocean. The band originally started as a post-hardcore band.
In 2008, the band started writing new material at Salad Days Studios in Baltimore, USA. Originally, the debut album was meant to be released in 2009, but fur unknown reasons they had to push the release up to February 1st of 2010. The debut album is called Cutting Our Teeth. In October of the same year, the album was re-released as a deluxe edition with a second disc, featuring a limited edition EP and four unreleased tracks.
In 2011, the band recorded their second album, Go Now and Live, which was released in the same year. The album's singles were all playlisted on BBC Radio 1. The album reached number 45 in it's first week. In 2012, the band went to the studio once again, but this time without Brown, who had left the band pursuing a career as a band manager. Cromby then took over the role of the lead vocalist. The third album, Maybe today, Maybe Tomorrow, was released in September of 2012. The album also sparked the transition from post-hardcore music to more of an alternative, pop punk and indie rock sound.
After a year of touring, in the Summer of 2014, the band recorded their fourth and final album, ARK. They released the eponymous teaser single at the end of the year. In addition, they also performed an acoustic version of the track at the BBC Live Lounge Session, complete with a covero f London Grammar's Hey Now. The album was released in May of 2015. The album also brought them to BMG/Infectious signing the band.
