Description
Matt had the idea of writing a song about being lost, like when you are tethered to a space station and get snipped off and floating off into space and seeing how the planet is disappearing[1] after watching some movies with Rich Costey, according to Matt, Costey has a projector and they decided to watch some sci-fi films from the 80s in the studio, Matt liked the synths the movies featured because they have a very 'ominous' and 'slightly threatening' sound like the work from John Carpenter, thus, inspiring him to compose The Void.[2]
Is the closer track of Simulation Theory. It had been called by many fans the "Exogenesis Part IV" due to the ambientation and the similarities with other closer tracks like Exogenesis Part III, Redemption, Isolated System and Ruled by Secrecy.
The Void (Acoustic)
With more piano and without synths.
You can watch the official lyric video of this version here.
Additional information
The Qmagazine made a preview of Simulation Theory on 23th October, and they said this about the song: "Closer The Void is Muse at their over-the-top best, a blend of Bellamy's call-to-arms vocals, classical piano and ominous sci-fi soundscapes."
This song, alongside other yet unreleased songs, was leaked in a series of short 20 second video clips showing the vinyl player.
You can see the official lyric video of the song here.
The Void was used as an intro song for BBC's 2019 documentary series about the solar system called The Planets, presented by Professor Brian Cox.
Composition
Bellamy said that the song was composed in a traditional style, like writing sheet music with a pen and paper, but on a computer. It started as a short arpeggiation sequence of MIDI notes that he wrote in a DAW. He expanded on the melody by adding more notes in classical formations and thus creating chord changes.
Live
Matt played an excerpt with the piano on an interview the 9th November 2018.
The Void made its live debut in Amsterdam in September 2019. It has been played live three times.
More info will be uploaded here.
Lyrics
They'll say, no one can see us
That we're estranged and all alone They believe nothing can reach us And pull us out of the boundless gloom
They're wrong They're wrong They're wrong Yeah baby, they're wrong They're wrong They're wrong
They'll say the sun is dying And the fragile can't be saved And the cold, it will devour us And we won't rise up and slay giants
They're wrong They're wrong They're wrong Yeah baby, they're wrong They're wrong They're wrong
It takes a leap of faith To awake from these delusions You are the coder and avatar A star
They'll say, no one will find us That we're estranged and all alone They believe nothing can reach us And pull us out of the boundless gloom
They're wrong They're wrong They're wrong Babe they're wrong They're wrong They're wrong
