Freilichtbühne Loreley

Freilichtbühne Loreley (Translated to English as Loreley Open-Air Stage or Loreley Open-Air Theatre) is an outdoor amphitheatre located on top of the Loreley (or Lorelei) slate rock mass in the town of Sankt Goarshausen in Germany, near the Rhein river. The venue was designed by Hermann Senf and was originally built in 1934 and 1939 as a Nazi Thingplatz (like the Berlin Waldbühne), for the so-called Thingspiele performances, the multi-disciplinary outdoor theatre performances which were popular breifly during the pre-war Nazi Geermany. It continued it's operations as a venue for theatrical performances after World War II but is, since 1976, mainly used for concerts. The theatre portion right in front of the stage has 5,000 seats, but the grass field behind it allows for around 10,000 more people, thus having the maximum capacity of 15,000. It is located near Loreley's camping ground.

After WWII, the arena was used as an international camp for European youth in 1951. Between 1957 and 1967, it was used for the presentation of classical drama performances. 1968 saw the venue starting to host orchestral and pop concerts. Since the performance of Genesis in 1976, it has primarily been used to host concerts and festivals.

Some of the musical acts who performed at the venue include Metallica, R.E.M., Ramones, The Kinks, Gary Moore and more. Since 1981, the arena has been frequently used by WDR, a German broadcasting institution, hosting Rockpalast, and, between 1981 through to 1985, the affiliated Loreley Open Air Festivals which included performances by Roy Gallagher, U2, Joe Cocker and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
