Opened in 1940, the full cricuit has the capacity of 60,000 spectators. The circuit is named after Carlos Pace, a Brazillian F1 driver, who died in a plane crash in 1977. The racetrack pays host to the Brazillian F1 Grand Prix since 1973. The circuit hosted several major motorsport events, apart from the F1 Grand Prix. In 2012 and through to 2014, it hosted the FIA World Endurance Championship, named 6 Hours of São Paulo.
The circuit is one of a minority of non-oval racing circuits to go in an anti-clockwise direction. In 1979, upgrades were made to the pit. The pit entrance was also enchanced to improve safety and add a new grand stand.
Since 2012, Autódromo José Carlos Pace is also the host location of the annual Lollapalooza Brazil festival. Muse performed at one edition, in 2014.
