Red Room Studio
A successor to the late (and now defunct) Studio Bellini, Red Room is a small studio, set up by Matt Bellamy and his producer Aleks Von Korff. It's located in the Santa Monica area of Los Angeles, California. The name of the studio first appeared in Will of the People's liner notes, however, the studio was (likely) built in 2017, and was used for recording parts of Simulation Theory. The name itself comes from the cult TV show, Twin Peaks, as the foyer room was, with its black and white flooring and red curtains, inspired by a room of the same name appearing in the show.
In terms of the rooms, it follows a similar room layout to what Studio Bellini had. The foyer area serves as a writing room, with a basic studio set up in it. The room also has a vocal booth, and houses Matt's synths (including his first synth, the the Roland Juno-60). Next to it is control room, connected to the main live room. The latter one houses an upright and a grand piano, most amplifiers and cabinets, a set of drums, aswell as two sofas and a couch, and a minibar. The studio has a hybrid set up; It uses both analog and digital equipment to recording, as opposed to (mostly) relying on analog equipment. Before having this set up, the live room served as a control room, featuring a big SSL desk, with the current control room serving as a small live room.
In an interview with the Guardian, Matt states that the studio space originally belonged to Rich Costey. It eventually changed hands as Costey relocated to Vermont in the wake of the COVID-19 lockdowns.[1]
In 2022, during an interview for CBS's Mornings, Matt took presenter Anthony Mason on a (very) brief tour around the studio.[2]
