Inside the stadium

RheinEnergieStadion (stylised as "RheinEnergieSTADION",formerly known as Müngersdorfer Stadion, named after the area of the city it's in) is a football stadium, located in Cologne, Germany. The stadium began construction in 1920, after the fortifications of Cologne were removed one year prior, and was opened in 1923. Up until 1933, it was frequently used by non-professional sportsmen. After WWII, the stadium has only hosted professional level sports. It is named after a local energy company, RheinEnergie AG, and owned by Kölner Sportstätten GmbH. In 2004, the stadium was awarded a bronze medal for distinguished sporting and leisure facilities, presented by the International Olympic Committee. The stadium's capacity is 50,000.

The stadium is the home ground to FC Köln, Viktoria Koln (selected matches) and the German national football team (selected matches). It used to be home to Kölner BC 01, SpVgg Sülz 07 and Cologne Centurions. During the 2004-05 season, the stadium was also home to the second tier Alemannia Aachen in their UEFA Cup campaign. The stadium was one of five stadiums hosting both the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2006 FIFA World Cup. It also hosted the 2020 UEFA Europa League Final. In the 1988–89 European Cup, the stadium paid host to a match between Bayer Leverkusen and Barcelona. In the 1996–97 UEFA Cup, Borussia Mönchengladbach played against Arsenal and Monaco at the grounds.

The RheinEnergieStadion also frequently hosts concerts by artists such as Coldplay, Rihanna, Queen, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson and more.
