Castle Donington Donington Park
Donington Park is a racetrack, located next to the village of Castle Donington, North West Leicestershire, near the border of Derbyshire, in England. It's 4.020 km in length and is owned and operated by MotorSport Vision. The park, specifically it's large grass area next to the track itself, is also used as a venue for music festivals such as the Download Festival and the Donnington Grand Prix Exhibition. The venue also hosted Ozzfest in 2002, Rock and Blues Festival in 2001 and Stereophonics' A Day At The Races, also in 2001. Monsters of Rock festival also took place at Donington Park between 1980 to the mid 90s, featuring performances by artists such as Metallica and AC/DC.
Opened in 1931 and originally part of the Donington Hall estate, it was built during the World Wars when the German Silver Arrows were battling for the European Championship. During WWII, it was used as a military vehicle storage depot and fell into disrepair after that, until it was bought again in the 1970s by British construction enterpreneur Tom Wheatcroft. It was used for an F1 race once, but was favoured by the MotoGP championship. In 2007, it was leased by Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd, but failed to raise sufficient financial backing and was returned back to the Wheatcroft family in 2009. In 2010, Donington Park underwent restoration work and it was announced the same year that it would become home to an annual historic motorsport event, the Donington Historic Festival. In 2017, the area was leased by MotorSport Vision and the facilities have once again been brought up to modern standards with major events such as British Superbike Championship and British GT happening at the race track.
