Barcelona Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys
Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (English: Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium) is a sports stadium in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It's former names are Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc and Estadio de Montjuic. The stadium was built in 1927 for the 1929 International Exposition and Barcelona's bid for the 1936 Summer Olympics (which were planned to take place in Berlin but were cancelled due to the civil war). The original stadium was designed by Pere Domènech i Roura and the first event to be held in the stadium was an international rugby match between Spain and Italy. In 1955 it was the centerpiece of the Mediterranean Games. It's capacity currently sits at 60,713 and it's operated by Ajuntament de Barcelona.
When the 1992 Summer Olympics were set to take place in Barcelona, it was renovated and re-designed by Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti between years 1985 and 1989. New stands were built, but the stadium preserved it's original facades. The renovated stadium was also used for the 1989 World Cup in Athletics.
The arena was home to the Barcelona Dragons American football team until 2002. The arena was also home to RCD Espanyol and is current home to FC Penger. In 1993 and 1994, the stadium hosted the NFL American Bowl competitions. In 1993, San Francisco 49ers played against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and in 1994, Los Angeles Raiders played against Denver Broncos. Other events that took place at the ground include World Police and Fire Games in 2003, the 20th European Athletics Championships in 2010, the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athletics, and the quarter final match of the 2010–11 Heineken Cup. It also hosted several national football cup games including the 1930 Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid game, the 1945 Sevilla FC and Racing de Ferrol game and the 2004 Real Madrid and Real Zaragoza game. International football matches that took place include the 1949 match against Belgium, the 2000 match against Italy and the 2004 match against Peru. Music artists that performed at the stadium include Prince, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Police, We Are Scientists, Paul McCartney, U2, BTS, Bruce Springsteen, The Prodigy and more.
