Tags are essential to make sure that both:

  • Listeners can find recordings quickly.
  • Recordings don't get lost, or mistaken for other recordings.

There are many tools for writing tags, especially for mp3 files. The chances are that your mp3 player will write tags, possibly the standard way, possibly not.

Other formats, such as Matroska, are a bit more of a pain. In Matroska the tags need to be written by hand in an xml file.

Conventions

The album field should be in the following form:

$YY-MM-DD: $Event, $Venue, $(City|Town|Village), $StateCode, $CountryCode

Where:

  • YY-MM-DD: The date of the performance in year-month-day form
  • Event: If there was an event name that isn't just the name of the venue. For example, if it was a festival, then the festival name would be put before the venue name. If there was no event name, this shouldn't be included.
  • Venue: The name of the venue.
  • City: The name of the ... city.
  • State code: The two letter ISO code for the state or province the venue is located in.
  • Country code: The two-letter ISO 3166-1 code for the country the venue is located in.

For example, Paléo Festival 2007:

2007-07-27: Paléo Festival, L'Asse, Nyon, VD, CH
