MUSE, The Streets and Twilight - The Truth
This is the story of how Robert Pattinson got the job of composing Bella's Lullaby for the upcoming Twilight film.
Stephenie Meyer: “Personally, I don’t think anybody could do a betterjob than Matthew Bellamy, because he is an amazing composer and his instrumental stuff is just the way Edward should play, because its so complicated,” Meyer observed. “It almost sounds like you’d have to have two people playing to get that level of sound. So, that would be my favorite.”
Stephenie Meyer finally tracked down Matt's contact details, and she called him to ask Matthew to do the great honour of composing a small piece of film music for her new film based on her novels. Little did she know, she would call at the worst time possible...
Little known to the public, Matt is actually at this point very busy writing/recording important music....with The Streets
Matt received the phone call while he was with all the boys in their studio "collaborating" (drinking and jamming to Led Zeppelin). Stephenie popped the question, and Matt, being a very busy man was currently occupied with something equally important and groundbreaking - as well as a bit taken aback at the proposition (probably not even knowing who called him). He replied with something about as classy as it gets after a few Coronas:
"Umm haha...yeah righto then...I'll just ahh...I'm with the boys now actually...I'll see what we can do hey....we might just whip something up today for ya I think, that's umm..all the time I've really got...."
Stephenie continued to fight for her cause:
"No, no....I was hoping we could have some meetings and discuss the setting and the mood of the piece so we could really get it right. I mean, it's not like composing for an album of your own stuff, it has to suit the movie you know?"
Matt being pulled away from the breakthrough collaboration with The Streets replied with:
"No it'll be fine, you liked my other stuff right? Well, we've got the Streets boys here too...can't really go wrong ey?"
Stephenie nervously placed down the phone and began her wait for whatever Bellamy might have to show her in the weeks to come...
Weeks later after the mixing and mastering process, Who Knows Who* is released under "Muse ft. The Streets". At first word of the song being released, Stephenie is exceptionally excited to hear it and is thrilled it has been finally released. As she listens to the first few bars of the song, she becomes apprehensive about whether the song will work. As the song progresses, tears begin to stream down her face as she realises that instead of her dream of a specially composed piece for her film by Bellamy, she has been hit with The Streets rapping loosely over the old "Heartbreaker" riff.
Ironic really.
She calls all those involved with the scoring of the film, and advises them to just get anyone to do it. Her spirit is now crushed as she cries pathetically for weeks.
She will never be satisfied with the movie's score... ever.
