Neuhausen ob Eck Flugplatz Neuhausen
The Flugplatz Neuhausen (English: Neuhausen Airfield) is a special airfield, located near the town of Neuhausen ob Eck, in the district of Tuttlingen, in Baden-Württemberg, Southern Germany. The 1,43 square kilometer airfield was used by the German army as a military airbase until 1994. Since then, it's use changed to being a special airfield, aswell as the site of the "Take-off GewerbePark Betreibergesellschaft mbH" business park.
It's history goes all the way back to 1935, when Luftwaffe presented their plans to build an airfield. Construction began a year later, in 1936, and was designed to be only used in an event of a war. The entire complex was finished in 1940. A few units of the Luftwaffe were stationed at the base, however the last of them departed in 1940, leaving only a small detachment to keep the airbase operational. Between 1942 and 1944, the base was used as a military exercise camp by the Flying Hitler Youth (Flieger-HJ). During WW2, the complex was also used by the Nachtjagdgeschwader 6 (Night Fighter Wing 6) as a storage facility for their aircraft. In 1945, after the airbase was occupied by the French army, they used it to store confiscated cattle and ammunition. The French used it for three years, until leaving it in 1948. Ten years later, in 1958, the airbase was chosen by the Federal Ministry of Defence as one of the airfields for the German Army Aviation Corps. The airbase itself remained under French administration until 1963, when it was handed over to the German government. The site was became operational again in 1966. In 1990, a reform of the German Army resulted in the disbanding of all units based on Neuhausen ob Eck Air Base, resulting in the subsequent closure of the airbase.
In 1997, the airfield was acquired by the town of Neuhausen ob Eck. It is now in use as a special airfield and can be used by fixed-wing aircraft with the weight limit of 5.7 tonnes, helicopters, motor gliders and ultralight aircraft. The airfield also has a hangar, with storage for up to 15 aircraft.
Since 2002, the site's been used as the main venue for the Southside Festival, the sister festival to the Hurricane Festival, held in Scheessel's Eichenring. Throughout their history both festivals featured artists like Placebo, Foo Fighters, Rammstein, David Bowie, The Cure, Billy Talent, NOFX, and more. Muse are set to perform at the 2023 edition of the festivals.
