Michael Eavis, the organiser of Glastonbury Festival, stated in January 2007 that he would like Muse to perform at the festival in 2008.[1] He revealed that he had been in negotiations with Muse for them to perform at Glastonbury Festival 2007, but the band decided to play at Wembley Stadium instead. Eavis commented that he'd then said "Why don't you put it off till next year?"[2] Of interest is Festivalwise.com's misleading headline, "Muse to Headline Glastonbury 2008" despite Eavis not suggesting a Muse appearance was anything more than a desire.

Thomas Kirk clarified in June that Muse had yet to make any tour plans for 2008, and the Eavis' want does not imply that Muse will be playing Glastonbury 2008.[3] He also reminded that all dates will be posted on Muse.mu as soon as they are confirmed, and thus those dates which have not been placed on Muse.mu are not confirmed.[3] Near the end of the 2007 Festival, Eavis stated that the next year's headliners had been confirmed and that 'It's not Muse or U2'.[4]

Muse were listed as a strong rumour by eFestivals for the Pyramid Stage at next year's Glastonbury Festival. appearance.[5] eFestivals' description of their rumour status is "there's a rumour, who knows if it's true?"[6] As such, this may have simply stemmed from Eavis' previous comments.

Christopher Wolstenholme stated in an interview with Q magazine at the Q Awards 2007 that them headlining Glastonbury is 'a flat "no"'.[7] It appears that he meant playing the festival at all, headlining or not.[7] Eavis later commented that he'd heard that Muse were playing V Festival and so wouldn't be able play Glastonbury.[8] In this comment, he appeared unsure - this belief may have derived from the existing rumours started by Drowned in Sound reader "Kev Kharas" three days earlier.[8][9]
