[Listen] (Alternate Reality Version)
Description
A very retro-futuristic and industrial sounding song.
The name of the song was mentioned by Matt while speaking with Matt Wilkinson on Beats 1 Radio on February 16th, 2018. According to Matt the song blends a bit of classical romantic piano with 80s synths/computer game music.
Matt said that "it’s about an intelligence, be it human or artificial, that realises that it lives in a simulated reality, and it is controlled by its creator. It feels betrayed, finds this situation unfair and tries to escape"[1], in another interview, he said that this song and The Dark Side deal with the struggle to get away of a dystopian world and the anxieties about technology, trying to escape of your anxieties or from a some kind of matrix.[2]
Algorithm (Alternate Reality Version)
More heavily orchestrated than its counterpart, this version is quite influenced by Hans Zimmer.
You can see the official lyric video of this version here.
Additional information
The Qmagazine made a preview of Simulation Theory on 23th October, and they said this about the song: "Opener Algorithm sounds like it could be from Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy soundtrack, a fusion of dramatic strings and industrial electro."
Matt's favourite track from the album, he said this in an interview about the song "My favourite track from the new album it's probably Algorithm, because it's an interesting combo of retro-synth and futuristic stuff".
This song, alongside other yet unreleased songs, was leaked in a series of short 20 second video clips showing the vinyl player. The full song was leaked the next day, on November 7th 2018
The song has also been compared by various reviewers to Apocalypse Please and Supremacy and by fans to Take a Bow and The Dark Side.
Music video
A very short bit of the music video was first shown by Matt on his phone during an interview on Virgin Radio Milan couple of days prior to the release. He also showed bits of it to the fans.
Terry Crews made an appearance once again after the Pressure music video.
