Metallica (1981- ) are an American heavy metal/thrash metal band and one of the most commercially successful musical acts of the recent decades. Currently comprised of James Hetfield on rhythm guitar and vocals, Kirk Hammett on lead guitar, Lars Ulrich on drums, and Robert Trujillo on bass (succeeding Jason Newsted and Cliff Burton), Metallica have sold more than 110 million records worldwide, including 66 million in the United States alone, and have been nominated for 23 Grammy Awards, of which they have won 9.

Shortly after listening to Muse at Big Day Out, their album Death Magnetic came out. "The Day That Never Comes," featured on that album, begins quite similarly to Muse's song "New Born," which was one of the songs Metallica heard Muse play. The Big Day Out footage shows James and Kirk headbanging to "New Born."
