A festival show, part of The Resistance Tour. Muse returned to Glastonbury for the first time since their legendary performance in 2004. A special night. With Muse at the peak of their popularity, the band performed in front of a very loud & lively Glastonbury crowd.

Information

Glastonbury creator Michael Eavis first mentioned the "Next in line to Queen's throne" headliner, via his Twitter feed, on the 2nd of December, 2009. Two months to the day later, Eavis stated, during the Event Production Show, that it would be Muse who would headline Glastonbury's 40th edition, on the 26th of June, 2010.[1]

The show

Matthew Bellamy told NME Radio that "We're hoping to do something a bit unusual there. A little collaboration with someone, maybe get Bono to come and sing a song. I'm not sure if he'll be hanging around for that, but I'll ask him anyway." U2 were to headline on 25th June, the night before Muse perform,[5] but were forced to withdraw after Bono suffered a back injury, making way for Gorillaz in the Friday night slot.[6] It was later rumored that U2 guitarist The Edge would perform with Muse.[7][8] This turned out to be true, as he sang and played guitar during an one-off cover of Where the Streets Have No Name, with Matt playing guitar and singing, Chris on bass, Morgan playing synths, and The Edge playing guitar and providing backing vocals.

According to a 2010 tour schedule diary for crew, an orchestra and choir was originally planned to be involved with the show to some extent. The diary lists 4 days of “orchestra rehearsal” during the week leading up to the show, from Monday 21 to Thursday 24 June. A staff contact page for “Glastonbury Orchestra” also details conductors, music transcribers, and contractors for strings players and a choir. When or why this plan was scrapped remains unknown.

The most voted songs on the official setlist polls were Citizen Erased, Assassin, The Small Print, Thoughts of a Dying Atheist and Darkshines, the first of which was played at the gig.

The gig saw the debut of the Manson Keytar, aswell as the graphite finish Status S2-Classic bass.

An early version of the main riff to Isolated System can be heard after the second verse of Undisclosed Desires.

Tom Kirk said in an interview that this gig was probably his favourite of The Resistance tour.
