Description
Intro to Defector. It samples John F. Kennedy's speech mixed with music which is a reminder of Defector's guitar solo melody, but with orchestral strings.

According to Matt Bellamy, the intro is a start to more positive songs on the album, where the main character defects against the system.
Matt said about the track that: "It talks about the human spirit, freedom and independence kind of stuff" and this is "where everything does a transition" and that "The JFK speech, at that time it was talking about the rise of communism and stuff, when you heard the words he said it's so relevant to the world even now".

According to Bellamy, during the first two hours aboard the ship the band were seasick, which he has attributed partly to drinking alcholic drinks the previous night.

The video of Starlight was premiered on Channel 4 on August 5th 2006 at 23.40 UTC+1. A low resolution recording in wmv format is available in Muselive.com's "Share Your Stuff" section.

Alternative Video
A Director's Cut for this video was also made containing new shots and different angles. Matt said in an interview on "Video Hits" back in 2006 that they were going to just shoot the video on blue screens in a studio, due to the fact that they couldn't get hold of a ship. However, a Japanese fan told Muse that they could borrow his dad's and hence the Starlight video was made.
The initial idea of the video had people carrying out their daily tasks, then breaking down. The video didn't turn out as expected, the environment was not intended to be as "pristine" as the recording location - Los Angeles - was. In the initial ideas, the people within the video were not meant to cry all the way through as they do in the final version.

The video was recorded while Muse were signed to Maverick Records in the USA. At the time, they were supporting Red Hot Chili Peppers in Los Angeles. The video was apparently "extremely" expensive to make, which Matthew Bellamy attributed to Maverick overhyping Muse. He also attributed their later falling out with Maverick to this overhyping.

During the recording of the video, director Joseph Kahn was almost run over by a truck by the camera van, whilst watching already recorded sections of the video. The actor who portrayed the crying fireman, Daniel Bilodeux, pulled Kahn out of the way just in time. Kahn's back was grazed in the process.

"And there was a couple of dodgy torture ones," added bassist Chris Wolstenholme.

Alternate videos
A Director's Cut of the video was also released, which consists of additional shots. These shots are mostly alternative shots or other people, such as a naked girl on the bed and a girl sitting on a toilet.

There is another video released in the USA, featuring live moments of the band, to go with the release of the Muscle Museum US-Mix single.

Other notes
On the official Muse website, the band does not have the original video in their "media" section. Instead, there is a video of them playing the song live at Glastonbury.
Live
Who Knows, Who Cares was written after the band's first two gigs and was likely debuted sometime between the third and fifth concert in 1994. It was performed at the Battle of the Bands performance in November 1994, as well as possibly into 1995, however it is unknown whether or not the band were still performing it by the time This Is A Muse Demo was released. This song may have been the last song in many early concerts.
Description
A song by Irish rock band U2, first appearing on their 1987 album The Joshua Tree and easily recognizable by its signature guitar riff. Muse, joined by U2 guitarist David "The Edge" Evans, performed a cover of the song during their headlining performance at the 2010 Glastonbury Festival, as U2 was set to perform the night before, but had to pull out due to a back injury the frontman Bono received earlier in the year.

Live
Muse performed this cover at that festival with U2 guitarist The Edge after hearing of this. It's very unlikely we will see another performance of this cover because it was a heat of the moment, one-shot sort of performance.
Information
A punk-inspired early song that Muse (one time under the name of Rocket Baby Dolls) played during battle of the bands contests. Matthew Bellamy mentions this song on the Origin of Symmetry interview promo.

In April 2009, a video of Muse playing Weakening Walls at a Battle of the Bands contest in Torquay in 1994 was uploaded on YouTube. Matt has addressed this version, alongside "Do We Need This" and the "Cave" remix, as "crap".

The name "Balloonatic" came from a children's television programme at the time the music was written. Matthew Bellamy stated that after he wrote the lyrics, the song was renamed "Twin", although complete versions of the song were in fact released under both titles, albeit with somewhat different lyrics in each.

The bass-line to this song bears similarity with Radiohead's "My Iron Lung" or Nirvana´s "Heart Shaped Box".

Live
Twin has only been played at two confirmed gigs, on January 11th 2000 and February 24th 2000. It is very likely though that the song has been played at gigs before this especially when considering the age of the song by then. As several gigs with unknown setlists were only a few days apart from these gigs, there is a chance that Twin was played more than twice in 2000.

Description
A song originally by grunge band Nirvana, from their album In Utero. Muse played "Tourette's" during their first two concerts, a Battle of the Bands competition in February 1994 and a roller disco a month lateruncertain.

Small Minded was the first song Bellamy composed and then recorded with Dom as duo. It included some piano parts,. Matt gave the cassette demo of the recording of the song to Chris to convince him to join the band. By the time of the MuseChat in November 2006, Bellamy couldn't recall the lyrics, nor what the lyrics were about.

Matt said in 2000, later compiled in a interview of the 2007: "It was about the attitudes of people on our town, We didn't approve of this."
"We were sick of drinking cider and being beaten up," added Dom.

Live
Small Minded was performed live at the band's first performance. It is likely it was performed at the second performance the following month as well, though this cannot be confirmed. The next performances were several months away and Small Minded was not performed at the November Battle of the Bands performance. It is likely that Small Minded was not continued into 1995 was performed less than five times.
The pre-apocalyptic Prince song was performed by Muse twice during their The 2nd Law promotion tour and once during the tour itself. During an interview with MuseLive, Dom said they may try and record the song in the studio.

Cover of a Prince song that was done at two promotional gigs in 2012 which required the band do a cover song. The band performed it at an actual concert once in 2013, though very little footage remains from this performance. Prince has a notoriously uncooperative management team and any footage shot of the song was almost immediately taken off the internet. Because of this, there is very few known remaining footage of its 2013 performance.
In France, a skinny man
Died of a big disease with a little name
By chance, his girlfriend came across a needle
And soon she did the same

At home there are seventeen year old boys
And their idea of fun
Is being in a gang called 'The Disciples'
High on crack, toting a machine gun

Time, times

Hurricane Annie ripped the ceiling off a church
And killed everyone inside
You turn on the telly and every other story
Is telling you somebody died

A sister killed her baby
'Cuz she couldn't afford to feed it
And we're sending people to the moon
In September, my cousin tried reefer
For the very first time
Now he's doing horse, it's June

Times, times

It's silly no, when a rocket ship explodes
And everybody still wants to fly?
But some say a man ain't happy
Unless a man truly dies, oh, why?

Time, time

Baby, make a speech, Star Wars fly
Neighbors just shine it on
But if a night falls and a bomb falls
Will anybody see the dawn?

Time, time

Is it silly no, when a rocket blows
And everybody still wants to fly?
Some say that man ain't happy, truly
Until a man truly dies
Oh, why, oh, why? Sign 'o' the times
Time, time
Description
A live cover of the synthpop song originally composed by Gershon Kingsley that became popular in the 1970s when it was covered by Hot Butter, first played by Muse at the Seaside Rendezvous concerts in September 2009 as it reminded of them of a roller-disco they once attended in Teignmouth. Muse performed at the French show Taratata. Muse were interviewed after playing their cover of Popcorn and Bellamy claimed that he 'Thought he would play something especially for them'.
This song was released as a b-side on the Resistance single, but on the muse.mu limited edition vinyl and digital B-side bundle only.

Live
Popcorn was rarely performed and was only played at the first five gigs of The Resistance tour. It was likely performed only for the Seaside Rendezvous gigs and then the following three gigs as some sort of treat to fans at the kickoff of the tour. The likelihood of Popcorn making a return to setlists is very low because of this as well as its status as a b-side. It was the last b-side to be performed live and the only one from The Resistance era to be performed.
Description
An early Muse song about online relationships. The opening guitar riff and melody are simple but become heavier at the very end. The outro riff is somewhat similar to that of Ashamed.

Additional information
The original version, released on the Muscle Museum EP under the name "Instant Messenger," featured the AOL voice saying "You've got post" at 0:24. However, due to legal pressure from the aforementioned company, this was removed for future releases, and the song was renamed "Pink Ego Box."

The version found on Origin of Muse seems to be a mix of these versions, retaining both the AOL voice and the final song name. Since the song appears only once in the box set, this may be considered the decisive version.

Live
No video recordings have surfaced of this song even though one video bootleg of the 07/12/1999 gig exists (the owner is too greedy to share it and it is likely the public will never see its release). It is unlikely Pink Ego Box was ever performed more than fifty times, but it is believed to have been performed at least twenty-five times (at the minimum).

More here

Trivia
On the "Instant Messenger" version, Paul Reeve provided backing vocals.

According to Matt, the name of the song is taken from the name of Muse's old tour bus.
Description
A mellow, instrumental B side that has been played regularly live.

The bass-line bears some similarity to the bass part of Rage Against the Machine's "Without A Face" and to Radiohead's "Climbing up the Walls". The slow, somber bass and drum combination is also reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb".

Live
"Nishe" was sometimes played before "Overdue". It was played often during the first half of January 2000 and semi-occasionally until mid-February when the song was dropped from setlists. Due to a lack of known setlists between late-February and April 2000 it is entirely possible that the song was played up until then. It was played regularly during The Resistance tour, whilst Matthew Bellamy's piano was being wheeled on stage in darkness for "United States of Eurasia". In the latter half of The Resistance tour, Matt joined in on piano while Morgan provided extra sound effects not heard on the album version. During the song, the fan passport-style photos were being displayed on-screen starting off in a mosaic to form the Muse logo then filling up the entire screen.

Description
Originally by 80's punk rock band The Cramps, Muse released their cover version of the song on 28th October 2016, a special for Halloween.

Additional Information
The band started teasing the fans only a couple of days before the release by uploading a short video on Instagram, with words saying "MuseHalloweenSpecial". They kept teasing the fans with stills and pictures taken on the set of the video shoot, before finally releasing a very short looped clip from the music video on their Instagram, with the description saying "October 28th".

The musical style of the cover is also reminiscent of Royal Blood with the bass taking care of all the guitar elements.

The song was recorded in Air Studios in London. It was produced by Muse, engineered by Tommaso Colliva and assisted by Tom Bailey. It was mixed and mastered by Rich Costey at Sound Factory Studios in Los Angeles.

Music Video
The music video, directed by Tom Kirk is shot in a similar style to that of Psycho's lyric video but with different background elements, aswell as an actress dressed up as the famous comedy-horror character Elvira.

It also features the band dressed up in leather clothing, playing their instruments and Matt wearing an Elvis wig while singing into a retro microphone.

Live
Though most believed that the band would not bring it into their live setlist, for 2017, New Kind of Kick has been performed at most gigs as of now. Matt does not do anything when the band perform this song; he leaves the stage and "has time for a tea" according to his Twitter feed. His prerecorded voice is played back while Chris and Dom play the song in the form of a drum and bass jam.
Description
"Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)" is a non-album song recorded in 2010 for the The Twilight Saga Eclipse Original Soundtrack. It was written without intent to include it on the soundtrack but was appropriate for it, so it was contributed. The song was previewed by Zane Lowe on BBC Radio One on 7:30pm BST on the release date, immediately after which it was available as a download single.

Additional Information
It is believed the outro dates back to 2003. It was first used as an intro to Sunburn. Later, Matt played the outro in an interview from Abbey Road in 2006.

The song is not well regarded by old fans along with Guiding Light. On several online polls it has ranked among the worst of Muse's discography because for them, it sounds "cheesy".

Live
The song was played nine times in 2010 before the band dropped the song. It was among the least played songs on the tour even with its single arriving during the tour.

Alongside many older tracks, Neutron Star Collision was revived during 2013. Ultimately the band must have had second thoughts, however, as it was only played at one gig.

More here

Recording
The song was recorded in April 2010 in California, after the Coachella festival, having been written after the release of The Resistance, at the beginning of the eponymous tour.

Stephenie Meyer's website announced the single on 6th May 2010:

:"The first single on "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" has just been confirmed and I get to bring you the exclusive details. Stephenie's very favourite band, Muse, have contributed a song called "Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)" and it's the first single from the project. [...]"

Right after the song was debuted on Zane Lowe's show, Matt was interviewed on how this song materialised. Matt explained:
:"Well actually the song was written, well I don't wanna bring anyone down, when I broke up with girlfriend about 8 months ago or something, and I pretty much wrote that song immediately after that. It was like that song was reflecting on that moment when you first get with someone and everything feels like it's going to go on forever and it's bit of like uh, bit of like a true love sentiment I suppose but for me when I wrote that song, it was quite heavy because it was like a memory of what it used to be like you know? Like when you used to think that way but now obviously it's the complete opposite of that when you break up. So when I'm singing that song, I'm kind of coming from that perspective really. So that song was floating around since about 8 months ago and that song was what I thought would probably be on another album in the future, but it's gonna be a long time until we get to do that, and then obviously these Eclipse, the Twilight people contacted us and um, were very keen to get a song for the film and I just thought 'why not?' you know? Might as well just bug it out there and get it out there because probably the song is representing a difficult period of my life and by the time we get to the next album it might not be relevant anymore because my life might be changed or moved on or something."

Since of late, this song has not been present in setlist, possibly due to said relevant changes.
Live
When played live, Matt sings

during the final chorus.

The piano outro is also omitted, apart from as medley during the 2010 U.S Spring Resistance Tour.

A neutron star collision

I had nothing left to lose
You took your time to choose
Then we told each other
With no trace of fear that...

Our love would be forever
And if we die
We die together
And lie, I said never
'Cause our love would be forever
Hail,
The preachers, fake and proud

That my love will be forever
While believed to have only been played once outside of 2000, Minimum was played very often throughout the year. Minimum was often played as the second last song on the setlists, before Showbiz closed the show. The song made only the occasional appearance between January and April before being played at nearly every gig between May and July. After the Summer Sonic gigs in early August, the song did not make an appearance for the remainder of the tour. Minimum was played the second-most out of any Showbiz B-side during 2000.
Information
Originally an instrumental song by the 60's band, The Shadows. It was played for the first time in Luxembourg, 26 May 2007 before Time Is Running Out and appeared regularly on setlists on the BH+R Tour. It hasn't seen any appearances in future tours however.

The band recorded their cover version and it was featured on a CD curated by the band in the 13th June 2007 issue of NME. They used a mobile studio on their laptops, working overnight on their tour bus between shows on their 2007 European tour, before emailing it to NME.

Trivia
With attentive listening a theremin-like sound can be heard throughout.

Live
Man of Mystery is the third highest played cover song, and was played commonly from May to July 2007. When the band recorded the song for the NME Supermassive Selection was roughly around the time the song was played. In its last few performances in July it was played at every other gig. Perhaps it was a song the band had been rehearsing for a while and, when recording it for the NME promo disc, decided to play it live as well. After two performances in August the song was dropped from setlists, with the exception of one performance in March 2008.

Lithium was performed in April 2014 as a tribute to Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. The song appeared on all three setlists for 2014 but was skipped on the 04/19/2014 date. Chris sang the chorus vocals but Matt did the rest of the vocals. It did not make any appearances on the Drones tour and was only performed because of the occasion (the twenty year anniversary of Kobain's death).

Lies is a cover of a CHVRCHES song, a band which Matt really loves. When the band were going to perform on BBC's Live Lounge, which usually asks its performers to do a cover, they decided on a CHVRCHES song for their cover. Thus, Lies was played once live for the special event. Despite assumptions that Lies would make an appearance or two on the Drones 360 Tour, no such appearance took place. It is doubtful the song will ever be played again.
Description
Matt said that the meaning of In Your World along with Dead Star it's about "how we should be responsible for our individual actions and not blame other people all the time" and added "I believe in the butterfly, or ripple, effect and that any individual's actions will have a cause and effect that they may not know about, not just on the people near them, but on others; sixth degrees of separation and all that. And that's what the songs are about."

Much shorter than the average Muse songs which, like Dead Star, allowed it to receive more radio play.

The song takes an influence from Bach, specifically, from Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

Live
In Your World was supposedly written while the band were on break from touring in September 2001 after the aftermath of 9/11. Its live debut took place only as matter of weeks away in October 2001 when In Your World made appearances at the majority of gigs following that point. Until mid-2002, In Your World was nearly guaranteed to be performed at every concert. Something happened, though, and the band stopped performing it live just after releasing it as a single. In Your World was one of the least-performed singles, as a result.

More here

Trivia
Coincidentally, the main riff for In Your World is very similar to part of the music for Level 5 of the original Castlevania game. It also bears strong similarity to the riff of the Beatsteaks song "Shut Up Stand Up". The Riff also bears some similarity to the Nirvana song "Drain You".
Description
House of the Rising Sun is an American folk song, thought to be written by Georgia Turner and Bert Martin. This song tells of hard times in New Orleans. The most well known version was recorded by Eric Burdon and The Animals in 1964.

Additional information
The song was never played live, and never released on any of Muse's singles - only an NME cover album. This song has been covered by many huge artists, including Tommy Emmanuel, The White Stripes, The Eagles, Bob Dylan, The Animals, and coincidentally Nina Simone (the same jazz artist who made Feeling Good famous). It was also the first song Tony Blair learned to play on guitar.

This song is featured as one of the 20 Best of War Child, it is in an album by them, containing many other artists.

An instrumental excerpt from the song was played during the 2006 tour, and again in the 2010 and 2013 tours as an intro to Time is Running Out. This instrumental is not played in the same fashion as Muse's recorded rendition, but instead in one similar to The Animals' version<!-- FIXME: Hey guyz, can someone add the live instrumental to the HotRS tab page? -- —compare the Muse rendition's tablature with the instrumental's tablature-->.
And me, oh god, I’m a-one
My sweetheart was a gambler, lord
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he’s satisfied
Is when he’s on a drunk

He fills his glasses up to the brim
And he’ll pass the cards around
And the only pleasure he gets out of life
Is ramblin’ from town to town

Oh tell my baby sister
Not to do what I have done
But shun that house in New Orleans
They call the Risin’ Sun

Well, it’s one foot on the platform
And the other foot on the train
I’m goin’ back to new Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

I’m a-goin’ back to New Orleans
My race is almost run
I’m goin’ back to end my life
Down in the risin’ sun
There is a house in New Orleans
Progressive, sinister b-side with an ending similar to that of Nature_1, but sped up. Played since the early days of the band but probably dropped shortly after the band began to play songs from the upcoming Origin Of Symmetry, as this was an old song at the time. Part of the song was played occasionally in 2012 and in 2017.

The chord progression of the song bears similarity to "Doll's illness" by Tchaikovsky from his "Album for the Young".

Live
Host was played often during early concerts before the band broke through. The only known full performances of the song come from 1997 shows including the Plymouth Hoe performance and one further performance in December 1997 where Host was the concert intro. Although it did not made any confirmed appearances during the Showbiz tour, it was soundchecked at least once in 2000.

The song then reappeared fifteen years after its last known performance in 2012 where it appeared in a shorter form for eleven gigs, usually as an intro to Time is Running Out. Host made two further appearances in 2017, again as a song intro but this time without the lyrics to the song.
Called Easy Tiger due to Matthew Bellamy saying "easy tiger" after performing it. A live version features as an extra track on the Absolution Tour DVD. In the live feature, Matt accidentally switches the order of the two lyrics: "Breaks my fall" and "Breaks my heart"

Matt revealed at New York's Webster Hall that the The Groove was an early version of Supermassive Black Hole. A possible explanation for this is that, during recording sessions for Black Holes and Revelations, the band revisited The Groove and came up with Supermassive Black Hole out of changes to the song. This could also act as an explanation why the song was dropped from setlists from 2005-2014 with the exception of a handful of instrumental performances in 2007 and 2008.

The version on the Butterflies & Hurricanes DVD includes a brief voice-over by Matt, explaining that copyright reasons prevented them from putting the whole song on a DVD before it had been released as a B-Side. The full uninterrupted version of this video appears on the Absolution Tour DVD.

The main riff bears similarities with the bass riff in the chorus of the song Fools Gold by The Stone Roses, the drums sound similar to Hyper Music while the solo has similarity to Tighten Up by the Black Keys, released in 2010.

Live
The Groove was played occasionally on the Absolution Tour. The song returned to the live arena in 2007, albeit only as an instrumental outro. It was finally played in full once again in Manchester on the Psycho Tour, on 22nd March 2015.

After playing the song twice in 2015, Matt cited Futurism and The Groove as two examples of b-sides he felt were better than some album tracks.
Description
Chaotic arrangement of noise, vocals included, but most is indistinguishable screaming with a few phrases such as "come on" and "yeah alright" audible.

Additional information
First recorded in 1996 as an outro to Crazy Days on the Newton Abbot demo. Often used live as an instrumental outro after either Showbiz or Stockholm Syndrome, or as part of a number of similar outros. Also played as a riff in the first live performance of Micro Cuts (song).

More here

In 2012, Bellamy called it the worst song he had ever written.

Trivia
Just before the music kicks in there is a hiccup.

The bass-line resembles that of Rage Against The Machine's song "Tire Me".

When using vocal removal software, a very faint laugh can be heard at the end.

At the 1:33 mark of the song after Matt's distorted falsetto, for a few seconds he makes a Bruce Lee type noise.
Information
Originally called Rusty One when played because of the buzz word that Bellamy used to describe it when played "Cheers, cheers... bit rusty that one" (Rock Oz'Arènes 2002).

Stylistically, it bears more resemblance to the epic, widescreen, cinematic tone of Black Holes and Revelations, featuring extensive use of synthesisers and vocodered backing vocals. The song is bookended by faint music box melodies and whispered vocals. Later, there is a fuzz-factory solo followed by a short instrumental breakdown featuring twinkling piano, thumping bass and eerie guitar in the style of Invincible, before Bellamy's humming build it up to a final chorus with the ever-thumping drums.

In the Making of Absolution documentary, Matt talks about how by the time they got to recording Absolution, they felt Eternally Missed was one of their best songs. However, after recording the album, Matt said he did not think it would even become a b-side.

Live
Eternally Missed was performed just four times upon its live debut. At the time, the band viewed the song as one of their finest and were keen to show it off at the last few dates of 2002. Their opinion had changed in the studio, with Matt once saying he thought the song wasn't even good enough to be a b-side. Thankfully, however, the song was released as the b-side to Hysteria, with the band never playing the song live again. Matt in 2018 cited Eternally Missed as an example of a song that the live audience didn't particularly care for, which is one of the reasons the song wasn't kept around in setlists.
Emotion Coming was written after the band's first two gigs and was likely debuted sometime between the third and fifth concert in 1994. It was performed at the Battle of the Bands performance in November 1994, as well as into 1995. Interestingly, Nature_1 was being performed live as early as March 1997 and features a lyric reference to this song.

Easily was ironically easily forgotten by the band until just before the London Shepherds Bush Empire 2017 gig when they mentioned it in an interview with Annie Mac. Due to fan pressure in the time leading up to the gig, Easily wound up debuting live at this gig. According to Matt at the gig, he wanted Easily to appear in Black Holes and Revelations but it didn't make the final cut due being recorded just a little too late after the recording sessions for Black Holes had finished. The bass and the drums were recorded first and then Matt added the vocals and the guitars later. It was never performed or even rehearsed together as a band until the 2017 performance.

Release
Easily is the B-side to Starlight. It surfaced August ~10th as a ~20 second clip from a person known as Mr X, the file was tagged as "easily_forgotten". On the 15th, another file surfaced on Muselive.com, protected by a code which was left for people to solve. This was eventually solved, revealing a 30 second clip along with another message within a plain text file informing that "Mr. X" will be back the following week. In an AIM chat using qua@aol.com, Matt was asked who "Mr. X was", and replied it was someone from the record company.

The song was leaked onto YouTube the day before the release date. The song's lyrics seem to describe a near-perfect sexual experience that cannot be forgotten.

Live
Easily was never a live candidate for the band. Muse performed Easily so little that even during recording sessions the song was never once played as a full band. It wouldn't be until London Shepherds Bush Empire 2017 that Easily would make its live debut after Matt highlighted the song as an example of the kind of obscure songs fans request to hear live. While it has now made its live debut, whether or not the band will bring it out for another performance had yet to be determined.
Description
An instrumental cover of the noise rock Lightning Bolt song. First played at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre 2004, December 19th, the riff was then played the next day at the same venue where it was swiftly followed by Apocalypse Please. It was also played on the following day at the same venue and a few more times during the 2005 North America Tour, as the opener track or before the last song of the set, Stockholm Syndrome. In 2013, Dracula Mountain was played again partially.

The most significant difference between Muse's live cover and the Lightning Bolt original was the notably slower tempo that Muse played it.

Live
Dracula Mountain was the second live-only cover performed by Muse, after tourette's in 1994, and was performed as a special intro on the last two dates of 2004 at Earls Court. The original song is somewhat different than Muse's version, though it remains similar. The song is only drum and bass, though Chris plays the bass in a way to Royal Blood in that it sounds very much like an electric guitar. After these two performances, Dracula Mountain was performed a handful of times at random dates on the following tour in 2005.
Description
Very creepy, with an emphasis on eerily simple piano and percussion at the beginning, which then morphs into the usual epic rock number, with a simple 3 chord power riff.

Additional information
It appears to be about perfectionism and the whole "Showbiz" theme: putting on a persona that doesn't reflect the persons true inner self. Matt believed it to be the best Muse song around July 1999, and when a fan asked why it wasn't on the album, he claimed it would be on the next album. Perhaps the band were saving it for the second album before deciding against it at some point after the release of Showbiz. This may not be the case, however, as Matt revealed during the first discussion about Muscle Museum's release that Do We Need This was intended to be an Uno b-side, and he addressed the song as "bad".

Thomas Kirk played some percussion.

Music trivia
At 2:23, 2:31, 2:35, 2:38 and 2:43, there is a scratching sound, like a zip.
The part starting at 2:49 sounds almost identical to "Freedom" by "Rage Against The Machine" (the riff at 1:44).

Live
Most likely due to a lack of tracks to play at larger gigs, the song was played very often between April and August 1999. Do We Need This typically acted as the outro song or the second last to be played during these gigs. After August and with the exception of the November 10th gig the song was mostly left out of setlists. It made a few appearances in January 2000 as well as unconfirmed performances in February before being dropped.
