Intro to Defector. It samples John F. Kennedy's speech mixed with music which is a reminder of Defector's guitar solo melody, but with orchestral strings.

According to Matt Bellamy, the intro is a start to more positive songs on the album, where the main character defects against the system.

== Trivia ==
JFK as an intro was aired at some tour dates during the Black Holes and Revelations tour in 2007, however it included more lines than the newer version, and only included his speech, without the string elements.

The background noise is the pitched down sound of a Drone MQ-9 Reaper flying, that sound is characteristic of the propellers of the so called drone.

Ewan Gordon McGregor OBE is a Scottish actor who has starred in various film and musical roles. His first professional role was in 1993, as a leading role in the British Channel 4 series Lipstick on Your Collar. He has also portrayed heroin addict Mark Renton in the drama films Trainspotting (1996) and T2 Trainspotting (2017), Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy (1999–2005).

Made by Japanese animator, artist and comedian Tekken. It's made in the style of a flip-book animation. The official title of the video is Pendulum. A few years later, Tekken also made a music video, in the same style, for [[Aftermath (video)|Aftermath]]

The Starlight video features the band playing on an oil tanker at sea. Towards the end of the video, night and day switch intermittently, and flares are fired above the tanker. The video was filmed on a cargo ship called Ocean Chie off of the cost of Los Angeles. The cargo ship embodied an "Indian" crew according to the official [[Official Muse site|Muse.mu]] news. ==Alternative Video==
A Director's Cut for this video was also made containing new shots and different angles. Matt said in an interview on "Video Hits" back in 2006 that they were going to just shoot the video on blue screens in a studio, due to the fact that they couldn't get hold of a ship. However, a Japanese fan told Muse that they could borrow his dad's and hence the Starlight video was made.

The initial idea of the video had people carrying out their daily tasks, then breaking down. The video didn't turn out as expected, the environment was not intended to be as "pristine" as the recording location - Los Angeles - was. In the initial ideas, the people within the video were not meant to cry all the way through as they do in the final version.<ref name="k2005">{{cite/Kerrang 2005}}</ref>

The video was recorded while Muse were signed to Maverick Records in the USA. At the time, they were supporting Red Hot Chili Peppers in Los Angeles. The video was apparently "extremely" expensive to make, which Matthew Bellamy attributed to Maverick overhyping Muse. He also attributed their later falling out with Maverick to this overhyping.<ref name="k2005"/>

During the recording of the video, director Joseph Kahn was almost run over by a truck by the camera van, whilst watching already recorded sections of the video. The actor who portrayed the crying fireman, Daniel Bilodeux, pulled Kahn out of the way just in time. Kahn's back was grazed in the process.<ref>

==The Original Idea==

According to Matt and Chris, the original idea was too dark, "There were some really perverted ones that were quite dark," explained Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy, "[one] involving an eight-year-old boy walking around with a syringe with milk [in it], squirting it in people's faces. I thought that was pretty dark, so that got a big no. Yeah, there were some weird, strange ones involving hospitals as well," Bellamy continued. "I think [directors] just read the title 'Muscle Museum' and think it's supposed to be a twisted, dark Marilyn Manson thing. But some of the ones I like have been quite weird. Who Knows, Who Cares was written after the band's first two gigs and was likely debuted sometime between the third and fifth concert in 1994. It was performed at the Battle of the Bands performance in November 1994, as well as possibly into 1995, however it is unknown whether or not the band were still performing it by the time This Is A Muse Demo was released. This song may have been the last song in many early concerts.

The likelihood of Popcorn making a return to setlists is very low because of this as well as its status as a b-side. It was the last b-side to be performed live and the only one from The Resistance era to be performed.

The song was recorded in April 2010 in California, after the Coachella festival, having been written after the release of ''[[The Resistance (album)|The Resistance]]'', at the beginning of the eponymous tour.

Stephenie Meyer's website announced the single on 6th May 2010:

:"The first single on "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" has just been confirmed and I get to bring you the exclusive details. Stephenie's very favourite band, Muse, have contributed a song called "Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)" and it's the first single from the project. [...]"

Right after the song was debuted on Zane Lowe's show, Matt was interviewed on how this song materialised. Matt explained:
:"Well actually the song was written, well I don't wanna bring anyone down, when I broke up with girlfriend about 8 months ago or something, and I pretty much wrote that song immediately after that. It was like that song was reflecting on that moment when you first get with someone and everything feels like it's going to go on forever and it's bit of like uh, bit of like a true love sentiment I suppose but for me when I wrote that song, it was quite heavy because it was like a memory of what it used to be like you know? Like when you used to think that way but now obviously it's the complete opposite of that when you break up. So when I'm singing that song, I'm kind of coming from that perspective really. So that song was floating around since about 8 months ago and that song was what I thought would probably be on another album in the future, but it's gonna be a long time until we get to do that, and then obviously these Eclipse, the Twilight people contacted us and um, were very keen to get a song for the film and I just thought 'why not?' you know? Might as well just bug it out there and get it out there because probably the song is representing a difficult period of my life and by the time we get to the next album it might not be relevant anymore because my life might be changed or moved on or something."

The song was never played live, and never released on any of Muse's singles - only an NME cover album. This song has been covered by many huge artists, including Tommy Emmanuel, The White Stripes, The Eagles, Bob Dylan, The Animals, and coincidentally Nina Simone (the same jazz artist who made [[Feeling Good (song) | Feeling Good]] famous). It was also the first song Tony Blair learned to play on guitar.

This song is featured as one of the 20 Best of War Child, it is in an album by them, containing many other artists.

An instrumental excerpt from the song was played during the 2006 tour, and again in the 2010 and 2013 tours as an intro to Time is Running Out. This instrumental is not played in the same fashion as Muse's recorded rendition, but instead in one similar to The Animals' version.

Host was played often during early concerts before the band broke through. The only known full performances of the song come from 1997 shows including the Plymouth Hoe performance and one further performance in December 1997 where Host was the concert intro. Originally called Rusty One when played because of the buzz word that [[Matthew Bellamy|Bellamy]] used to describe it when played "Cheers, cheers... bit rusty that one" ([[Avenches Arena 2002 (gig)|Rock Oz'Arènes 2002]]).

Stylistically, it bears more resemblance to the epic, widescreen, cinematic tone of [[Black Holes and Revelations (album)|Black Holes and Revelations]], featuring extensive use of synthesisers and vocodered backing vocals. The song is bookended by faint music box melodies and whispered vocals. Later, there is a fuzz-factory solo followed by a short instrumental breakdown featuring twinkling piano, thumping bass and eerie guitar in the style of [[Invincible (song)|Invincible]], before [[Matthew Bellamy|Bellamy]]'s humming build it up to a final chorus with the ever-thumping drums.

In the Making of Absolution documentary, Matt talks about how by the time they got to recording Absolution, they felt Eternally Missed was one of their best songs. However, after recording the album, Matt said he did not think it would even become a b-side.

Eternally Missed was performed just four times upon its live debut. At the time, the band viewed the song as one of their finest and were keen to show it off at the last few dates of 2002. Their opinion had changed in the studio, with Matt once saying he thought the song wasn't even good enough to be a b-side. Thankfully, however, the song was released as the b-side to Hysteria, with the band never playing the song live again. Matt in 2018 cited Eternally Missed as an example of a song that the live audience didn't particularly care for, which is one of the reasons the song wasn't kept around in setlists.

A punk-inspired early song that Muse played during battle of the bands contests. In April 2009, a video of Muse playing "Emotion Coming", at a Battle of the Bands contest [[English Riviera Centre 1994 (gig)|in Torquay in 1994]], was uploaded on YouTube.<ref name="yt200904">

Emotion Coming was written after the band's first two gigs and was likely debuted sometime between the third and fifth concert in 1994. It was performed at the Battle of the Bands performance in November 1994, as well as into 1995. Interestingly, [[Nature_1 (song) | Nature_1]] was being performed live as early as March 1997 and features a lyric reference to this song.

Easily was ironically easily forgotten by the band until just before the [[London Shepherds Bush Empire 2017 (gig)| London Shepherds Bush Empire 2017]] gig when they mentioned it in an interview with Annie Mac. Due to fan pressure in the time leading up to the gig, Easily wound up debuting live at this gig. According to Matt at the gig, he wanted Easily to appear in [[Black Holes and Revelations (album)|Black Holes and Revelations]] but it didn't make the final cut due being recorded just a little too late after the recording sessions for Black Holes had finished. The bass and the drums were recorded first and then Matt added the vocals and the guitars later. It was never performed or even rehearsed together as a band until the 2017 performance.

==Release==
Easily is the B-side to [[Starlight (song)|Starlight]]. It surfaced August ~10th as a ~20 second clip from a person known as Mr X, the file was tagged as "easily_forgotten". On the 15th, another file surfaced on Muselive.com, protected by a code which was left for people to solve. This was eventually solved, revealing a 30 second clip along with another message within a plain text file informing that "Mr. X" will be back the following week. In an AIM chat using [[qua@aol.com]], Matt was asked who "Mr. X was", and replied it was someone from the [[Warner|record company]].<ref>[http://www.muselive.com/forums.php?m=posts&p=557489 20061124 muselive.com forum post]</ref>

The song was leaked onto YouTube the day before the release date. The song's lyrics seem to describe a near-perfect sexual experience that cannot be forgotten.

==Live==

Easily was never a live candidate for the band. Muse performed Easily so little that even during recording sessions the song was never once played as a full band. It wouldn't be until London Shepherds Bush Empire 2017 that Easily would make its live debut after Matt highlighted the song as an example of the kind of obscure songs fans request to hear live. While it has now made its live debut, whether or not the band will bring it out for another performance had yet to be determined.

An instrumental cover of the noise rock [[Lightning Bolt]] song. First played at the [[London Earls Court Exhibition Centre 2004 - 19th (gig)|Earls Court Exhibition Centre]] 2004, December 19th, the riff was then played the next day at the same venue where it was swiftly followed by [[Apocalypse Please (song)|Apocalypse Please]]. It was also played on the following day at the same venue and a few more times during the 2005 North America Tour, as the opener track or before the last song of the set, [[Stockholm Syndrome (song)|Stockholm Syndrome]]. In 2013, Dracula Mountain was played again partially.

The most significant difference between Muse's live cover and the Lightning Bolt original was the notably slower tempo that Muse played it.

==Live==

Dracula Mountain was the second live-only cover performed by Muse, after tourette's in 1994, and was performed as a special intro on the last two dates of 2004 at Earls Court. The original song is somewhat different than Muse's version, though it remains similar. The song is only drum and bass, though Chris plays the bass in a way to Royal Blood in that it sounds very much like an electric guitar. After these two performances, Dracula Mountain was performed a handful of times at random dates on the following tour in 2005.

It appears to be about perfectionism and the whole "Showbiz" theme: putting on a persona that doesn't reflect the persons true inner self. Matt believed it to be the best Muse song around July 1999, and when a fan asked why it wasn't on the album, he claimed it would be on the next album. At 2:23, 2:31, 2:35, 2:38 and 2:43, there is a scratching sound, like a zip.
The part starting at 2:49 sounds almost identical to "Freedom" by "Rage Against The Machine" (the riff at 1:44).

Most likely due to a lack of tracks to play at larger gigs, the song was played very often between April and August 1999. Do We Need This typically acted as the outro song or the second last to be played during these gigs. After August and with the exception of [[Paris MCM Café 1999 (gig) |the November 10th gig]] the song was mostly left out of setlists. It made a few appearances in January 2000 as well as unconfirmed performances in February before being dropped.
