On live versions, before the main riff, Matt uses (Origin and Absolution era) his Zvex Fuzz Factory and plays around with the gate (similarly to the intro of Plug In Baby) or (Black Holes and Revelations and later) he randomly scratches on his XY MIDI Pad controlling the Kaoss Pad on a modulation setting. If you have neither the Fuzz Factory or the Kaoss Pad you can simply turn distortion on, if its not already, and scratch your pick against the D, A, and D strings and randomly play notes with the left hand for a similar heavy squealing sound.
