Description
'Liquid State' is one of two songs on the album written by Chris about his struggle with alcoholism, the other being 'Save Me'. Chris said the song was 'written about the person you become when you're intoxicated and how the two of them are having this fight inside of you and it tears you apart'.

According to some of the latest interviews, this song (Liquid State) is the heaviest song on the entire album, and has been compared to Queens of the Stone Age. It bears resemblance to the Queens of the Stone Age song "You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire".
Announced on March 11th, 2022, their second song off to be released and to be featured on the new album, Compliance, is set to be released on March 17th, 2022. The song, and its music video, leaked two days earlier, on March 15th, 2022, through Vimeo.

According to Matt Bellamy, "Compliance is about the promise of safety and reassurance sold to us by powerful entities during times of vulnerability. Gangs, governments, demagogues, social media algorithms & religions seduce us with misleading untruths and comforting fables. They want us to join their narrow worldview in exchange for obedience and turning a blind eye to our own internal voice of reason & compassion. They just need our Compliance."

The song is mostly reminiscent of elements from 80s and 90s pop and synthpop, while bringing in some elements of big beat. The the guitar lick during the verses, and the synth solo line are reminiscent to the Knight Rider theme song.

The song's name was unknown until the 13th July 2012, the day that Muse tweeted the same picture with Dom and the leaked names, but with the working titles replaced by the new album tracking list. It's unknown if this song is linked with one of the others in the board, in the old picture, or if it's another one.

The song was also featured in one of the trailers for a video game, Crysis 3, released on February 7th, 2013
Compliance is based around organic elements, with a simple drum part, almost sounding like its looped, and a distinctive bass line riding throughout the entire song. The song doesn't appear to include a lot of guitar, apart from the palm-muted "Knight Rider" one in the verses and the final chorus, and the heavily-synthisized guitar during the solo. It also seems to include a keytar during the solo and the final chorus. The lead synth during the chorus was presumably inspired by Van Halen's Jump, as it (the Jump synth) was heard in an Instagram video, posted by Aleks Von Korff in Muse's studio back in 2021. The song runs at a tempo of 110BPM.

Liquid State is a relatively heavy song written by Chris Wolstenholme about his struggle with alcoholism. Upon making its live debut in early 2012, it was never played in the same gig as the other song on the album written by Chris, Save Me. The two had been on rotation since their debuts, however for one reason or another Liquid State was almost always played instead. It would appear in most 2012 gigs and almost all 2013 gigs, with the exception of a handful of gigs at the end of 2013 and a few scattered concerts throughout the year, despite only being performed once in 2014.
Directed by Jeremi Durand, the music video is loosely continuing the theme from Won't Stand Down's music video. More can be read here.

Break me up and steal what’s left inside
We just need your compliance
And hope and pray iniquity has died inside and left a scar

We lose control, the world will fall apart
Love of your life, will mend your broken heart
