Before Matt, Dom and Chris formed Muse, Gothic Plague and Fixed Penalty were two main bands in Teignmouth High School. Apparently Chris drummed in Fixed Penalty, and Matt and Dom were in Gothic Plague.

Fixed Penalty was a band covering songs of Mega City Four and The Wonder Stuff. "I was really pissed off with our band." said Chris. "Because we were doing lots of covers - Mega City Four and The Wonder Stuff, that sort of thing. There was a time when it was really cool but by then it had got to the point where those bands had split up, but we were still dragging out. And the people I was playing with just weren't... music people. They were skaters or just wanted to be in a band because it was cool, rather than just enjoying playing music."

Chris eventually joined Matt and Dom's band and became the bass player.
